Possibility of ore exploration in the Kepala Burung region, Irian Jaya
Mining Conference 1988, Mining Prospects and challenges in Indonesia during the fifth development plan (Repelita V), 28 - 30 September 1988, Jakarta - Indonesia
Kepala burung, the western portion of Irian Jaya is an amalgamation of diverse terrains with oceanic as well as continental affinities. These terrains are floored by oceanic crust and are justaposed along sutures recognized as major faults.
Large positive Bouguer anomalies in the order of 1500 um/sec2 and large total magnetic anomalies of 2500 nT are due to occurances of basic igneous rocks intruding the Silurian/Devonian Kemun formation. These anomalies may form a target for detailed exploration of metallic ore deposits which may have been deposited along the contacts between the intrusives and the intruded rocks. Traces of copper, lead, and zinc mineralizations and also nickel - cobalt laterite are reported by earlier workers.
Detailed geophysical and geochemical exploration on the anomalous area are recommended. The geophysical surveys may include magnetics, electromagnetics, Included Polarisation, resistivity and radiometric surveys.
